Ceremonies to Commemorate
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) commemorated Armed Forces Day on February 21, 2023, at the Voortrekkerhoogte Monument outside Pretoria. President Cyril Ramaphosa reviewed a parade and laid wreaths to honor those who died in the line of duty.
The event marked the 81st anniversary of the sinking of the SS Mendi, a South African troopship that was torpedoed in the English Channel in 1917, with the loss of more than 600 lives.
Armed Forces Day is an annual event that marks South Africa's greatest wartime maritime disaster.
